Glitterbug – Privilege (c.sides007 – Kompakt)
Was für ein Fest: Der Glitterbug Till Rohmann hat in seinem Kölner Studio ein Jahr lang gebastelt, um Norwegen, Indien, Polen, China und Israel in seinen Sound zu holen- und hat Field Recordings von unterwegs benutzt. So sagt er selbst im Booklet dieser wunderbaren Doppel-CD. In einer Zeit des Umherreisens merkt Rohmann kritisch an, das er an Plätze und Orte gelangte, an denen Menschen ohne dieses Glück leben, was wiederum seine Musik beeinflusst hat. Der Anthropologe Ghassan Hage nennt das “Stuckedness”, das Festsitzen, Sitzenbleiben. Glitterbug kann nicht festgehalten werden, die Tranks haben nur einen Anker, und das ist die introvertierte Version von Techno (hör’ mal ‘Swirl’ und im Anschluss ‘Blue Rifts’). Klingt vielleicht pathetisch, aber wenn man Glitterbugs Tracks lauscht, meint man eine bessere Welt zu hören, eine Utopie ohne Worte. CJ

What a celebration: the glitterbug Till Rohmann was busy contriving in his studio for a year long, bringing in the sounds of Norway, India, China and Israel, melding field recordings from his long travels. This he tells us himself in the booklet of this marvelous double CD Album. During long periods of touring, Rohmann critically reflects on arriving in places where people live a less fortunate life, a notion that deeply influenced his music, and a circumstance the anthropologist Ghassan Hage dubbed as ‘Stuckedness’. But Glitterbug can’t be held back, his tracks only have one anchor, and that is the introverted version of Techno (just listen to “Swirl” and directly after to “Blue Rifts”). It may sound a bit pathetic, but when one listens to Glitterbug’s music, it feels like listening to a better world, a utopia without words.

“Der Kölner Till Rohmann alias Glitterbug ist Produzent, DJ, komponiert Filmmusik und veranstaltet gemeinsam mit der israelischen Medienkünstlerin Ronni Shendar das C.Sides-Festival für elektronische Musik und Medienkunst in Tel Aviv. Daneben hat er noch Zeit gefunden, ein superbes Doppelalbum zu produzieren: Auf „Privilege“ verarbeitet er die Eindrücke, die er während seiner letztjährigen Welttournee gewann. Sein zauberhafter, ambientöser Techno ist großes Kino: Feldaufnahmen der Reise und nie gehörte Klänge verschmelzen mit vertrauten Beats zu einem atmosphärischen Ganzen; die Musik strahlt eine Wärme aus, die in dieser Form in Techno-Produktionen selten ist. Trotzdem entstehe nun nicht der Eindruck von zuviel Lauschigkeit; die Musik bleibt in allen Momenten mitreißend, anspruchsvoll, subtil und zerbrechlich.”

Dubbelalbums zijn schaars. Echte dubbelalbums dan hè, niet die dingen met een bonus-dvd of een halfslachtig remix-schijfje. De Keulense technoproducer Till Rohmann schrok niet terug voor 140 minuten muziek maar snapt ook wel dat je de drumcomputer af en toe op adem moet laten komen tijdens zo’n lange reis, wil de luisteraar niet afhaken. De kans daarop is overigens klein. Niet als je van mooie, melancholische elektronische dansmuziek houdt, waarbij melodie en ruimte belangrijker zijn dan een steady basdrum. Net als het sprankelende debuut Supershelter (2008) is Privilege een album dat op veel verschillende fronten indruk maakt. Thuis, op reis of in de club. Maar het tempo ligt wel een stuk lager. Was Supershelter gericht op de heupen, Privilege mikt meer op de onderbuik en het hoofd. Neem Float op de tweede cd. Een zacht wiegend nummer waarop de basdrum pas na drie minuten voorzichtig z’n kop om de hoek van het zoutwaterbad steekt. Live is Glitterbug trouwens een sensatie. Mis ze niet als ze eind mei op Off Centre in de Melkweg staan. 5/5 (Rene Passet)

Double albums are scarce. Real double albums that is. Not the ones that slip in a bonus dvd or a disk with crappy remixes. No, we mean the whole nine yards. Or in this case: 140 minutes of new music. Even for German beat innovator Till Rohmann better known as Glitterbug that means quite a challenge. With such a distance in time the producer from Cologne understands he has to give his drumcomputers some rope now and then. Just to keep the listener aboard. Rest assured, Privilege may be a long trip, it doesn’t feel that way. Like the sparkling Glitterbug debut Supershelter (2008) the new album offers a wide range of crystal clear electronic melancholica. But it’s by no means a carbon copy. Most tracks on Privilege make wider circles around dancefloors and only occasionally hit the hands-in-the-air area. It’s an album that’s all about the mood and the mind. Float, for instance, would be the perfect soundtrack for a swim in the Dead Sea, where high salt levels and a lurking bassline keep you above sealevel.
When Glitterbug does crank up his four cylinders, it is more than a reminder of his sensational live sets we’ve seen him play in recent years. Privilege works on many levels. A strong, extensive return. 5/5 (Rene Passet)

Der Kölner Till Rohmann a.k.a. Glitterbug hat ein Doppelalbum erschaffen, das sexy selbstverständlich zwischen Tanzflur und ambientem Soundtrack vermitteln kann. Diplomaten-House!

Der Kölner Till Rohmann alias Glitterbug gibt den Fährmann. Ein Stück Holz wird in den Fluss geworfen, treibt unaufhörlich weiter, das Ufer, der ganze Rest verschwimmt. So fühlt man sich mit und auf dieser Platte. Man wird in Empfang genommen, ab dann geht alles wie von selbst. Bis die letzten Klänge der 20 Tracks langen Reise verstummt sind und man wieder in sein kleines Musikzimmer ausgespuckt wird.

Dass „Privilege“ ein Konzeptalbum darstellt, muss man bei all dem Fluss und dem Geflossen-Werden als Hörer gar nicht zwingend mitdenken. Man ahnt es ohnehin schon, und es fühlt sich an wie die letzte Bestätigung, dass man es hier absolut nicht mit emotionsloser, kühler Tanzmusik zu tun hat – sondern mit hochsensiblen Tracks, die neben der vollen Länge im erwähnten privatistischen Musikzimmer auch genauso einzeln und losgelöst im Club funktionieren können.

Was bleibt, ist ein Album, das mit der Zeit nur noch weiter wachsen kann und somit für nicht weniger als die Ewigkeit bestimmt ist.

The Cologne based producer Till Rohmann aka Glitterbug created a double album, that sexily-naturally moderates between the dancefloor and an ambient soundtrack. Diplomat’s House music!

The Cologne based producer Till Rohmann aka Glitterbug mimes the ferryman. A piece of wood is thrown into the water, floats unstoppably, and the shore, and everything else beyond, immediately becomes blurry. This is how one feels with this record. You are picked up in the beginning, and from there everything happens on its own. Until the last sounds of this 20 track long journey become silent and one is spit out in their private little listening room again.

‘Privilege’ is a concept album, but that is nothing that the listener needs to bare in mind with all this floating and being floated. One may suspect this already, but once listening you get the final confirmation: this doesn’t have anything to do with emotionless, cold dance music- these are highly sensitive tracks, that fulfill their destiny both in all of its epic length at home as well as melted out of the greater context as single tracks in the club.

What remains is an album that over time only continues to grow and is thus destined for nothing less than eternity.

Techno hat ihn zum Kosmopolit gemacht. ‘Privilege’, Till Rohmanns zweites Album als Glitterbug, dokumentiert diese Entwicklungsgeschichte mit einem durchaus kritischen Verhältnis zum globalen Wanderzirkus der elektronischen Tanzmusik. Vom Köln-Ehrenfelder Hinterhof über die Organisation des c.sides Festivals in Jerusalem und Tel Aviv in die Clubs der Welt ist es ein weiter Weg. Till Rohmann hat sich auf diesem Weg einen wachen Blick und ein aufnahmebereites Bewusstsein erhalten.

Es kann nicht genug betont werden: Techno- und Housetracks sind spezifisch. Sie haben eine Geschichte und eine Bedeutung, die sich ändern, wenn ein Track in einer zugigen Tromsoer Fabrikhalle oder vor der “jeunesse doree” New Delhis gespielt wird.

Genau das passiert auch auf ‘Privilege': Die kühle Melancholie des klassischen Detroit-Technos geht auf eine 140-minütige Reise, begegnet Ambient, Feldaufnahmen, Kammermusik und außereuropäischen Musikwelten, wird von Dub gewärmt und von Gamelan erfrischt, und findet doch immer zu ihren Wurzeln zurück, verändert und neu, aber unverkennbar. Ein gedämpft euphorisches Fülhorn. Die durchgehende Substanz und subtile Tiefe der Tracks macht nicht zuletzt klar, dass die Begeisterung, die um Rohmanns erstes Album aufkam, kein Hype war. Es ist Musik für die lange Strecke. Musik die bleibt.

Techno made him a cosmopolitan. ‘Privilege’, Till Rohmann’s second album as Glitterbug, documents this development with a critical perspective on the traveling circus of electronic dance music. From a back yard studio in Cologne, through organizing the c.sides Festival Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, to the clubs of the world, is a long path. Till Rohmann managed to sustain his attentiveness and receptive consciousness along it.

It can’t be said enough often: Techno- and House tracks are very specific. They have both a history and a meaning, that change if a track is played in a draught northern Norwegian warehouse or in front of the lucky golden youth of New Delhi.

And exactly that happens in ‘Privilege': The chilly melancholy of classic Detroit techno embarks on a 140 minute long journey, encountering ambient, field recordings, chamber music and non-european musical worlds, warmed by dub and refreshed by Gamelan, yet always finds its way back to its source, altered and new, yet completely distinctive. A slightly muffled euphoric cornucopia. The tracks’ consistency and their subtle depths are some of the elements that substantiate that the enthusiasm regarding Rohmann’s first album ‘Supershelter’ was no hype. This is music for the long way ahead. Music that remains.

Amidst the possibly most stressful period prior to the release of ‘Privilege’ in four weeks, i thought to share a few updates.

I have been awfully busy with remixing, and, even more importantly, mixing endless podcasts for some of the large platforms out there. Watch out for some nice surprises… mixing the podcasts was an especially wonderful thing, since I have been mostly listening to ‘Privilege’ while finalizing the album, and to endless rehearsals for the new show that we’ll start touring with in May. So going through endless promos and fishing for exciting new music was an amazing treat after all that Glitterbug music…

In the meanwhile, the vinyl edition of ‘Privilege’ came in:

It’s a hand numbered, strictly limited (to 500 copies) double vinyl. No. 1-360 have the beautiful CD booklet as part of the package. The vinyl edition has a bonus track that won’t be available digitally or elsewhere, and since we could not fit the whole 20 tracks / 2,5 hrs of music of the CD on vinyl, everybody that purchases the vinyl (and sends us a picture of the hand written number and of the vinyl in a beautiful surrounding of their choice) will receive a download link to the whole CD album.
