The dutch electronic music magazine DJ Broadcast did a really crazy project in the fantastic Off Centre Festival that we had the joy and honor to play at: they produced their next issue in 24 hours, inside the festival facilities of the Melkweg. And we were lucky enough to be the cover story of the magazine!

“Glänzende 140-minütige Vorstellung eines Reisenden in Sachen elektronischer Musik. Von TOM ASAM
Till Rohmanns Aufbruch in die Weiten der elektronischen Musik waren illegale Acid-Partys in den späten 80ern, gefolgt vom Eintauchen in die experimentelle Technoszene der 90er-Jahre in Köln. Mittlerweile pendelt er zwischen Rhein, Israel (wo er an der Organisation eines Technofestivals beteiligt ist) und den Clubs der Welt. Obwohl sein Debüt „Supershelter“ keinerlei Schelte, sondern jede Menge super Besprechungen einfing, scheint Glitterbug hierzulande noch eine Sache für Eingeweihte. Das niederländische Magazin DJ Broadcast spricht von “Germany’s best kept techno secret.” Mit “Privilege” gelingt das Kunststück, Detroit-geschulten Techno so mit ambienthaften Elementen und – mal offensichtlichen, mal subtil verfremdeten – Field-Recordings anzureichern, dass man nach dem 70 Minuten dauernden ersten Tonträger keinesfalls gelangweilt ist, sondern sich wundert, wo die Zeit geblieben ist und gerne mit CD 2 weitermacht.
Das Glück der Freiheit
Die kosmopolitische Einstellung Rohmanns dient nicht nur der Vielschichtigkeit seines Techno-Ansatzes, sondern schlägt sich auch in seiner Weltsicht nieder. So erklärt sich der Albumtitel nach dem Lesen des Booklets insofern, als Rohmann es als Glück bezeichnet, die Möglichkeit zu haben, die Welt zu bereisen. Er spricht gar von einem obszönen Reichtum an Möglichkeiten, die sein Leben im Vergleich zur Mehrheit der Erdenbewohner in sich birgt. Die musikalische Umsetzung seiner Erkenntnisse wirkt jedoch ob dieser Ungleichheit weder desillusioniert noch technoid-unterkühlt. “Privilege” strahlt eher eine undefinierte Zuversicht aus und dient hoffentlich möglichst vielen dabei, von der Schönheit des Lebens zu träumen und an ihr zu partizipieren. Und sei es nur für eine gelungene Nacht im Club oder unter den Kopfhörern.”

Der Kölner Till Rohmann ist Produzent, DJ, komponiert Filmmusik und veranstaltet gemeinsam mit der israelischen Medienkünstlerin Ronni Shendar das C.Sides-Festival für elektronische Musik und Medienkunst in Tel Aviv. Auf „Privilege“ verarbeitet er die Eindrücke, die er während seiner letztjährigen Welttournee gewann; die dazugehörigen visuellen Impressionen kann man bei seinen multimedialen Live-Sets sowie auf den Photos des Booklets beschauen.
Auch die Musik des Doppelalbums ist großes Kino: Feldaufnahmen der Reise und nie gehörte Klänge verschmelzen mit vertrauten Beats zu einem atmosphärischen Ganzen; die Musik strahlt eine Wärme aus, die in dieser Form in Techno-Produktionen selten ist. Atmosphärische Eleganz
Till Rohmann alias Glitterbug hat viel zu erzählen. Zwei Jahre nach seinem Debütalbum legt er mit „Privilege“ ein Doppelalbum nach. Ihre kölsche Herkunft können seine atmosphärischen Tracks dabei nicht verbergen, trotzdem ist Glitterbug eher ein untypischer Vertreter der Technoszene rund um den Dom.
Rohmanns Arbeitsweise auf „Privilege“ ist der von Pantha Du Prince nicht unähnlich. Field Recordings und Studioarbeit gehen bei zwanzig Tracks und mehr als zwei Stunden Spielzeit Hand in Hand. Mal kümmert sich Glitterbug dabei „nur“ ums Ambiente, lässt dann wieder die Technosau raus, um im nächsten Track sich dem Sog von Melodien hinzugeben, mit den er sich nachträglich für die letzte Ausgabe von „Pop Ambient“ bewerben könnte.
Der Club interessiert Rohmann dabei höchstens peripher, er begreift seine Form von Techno als listening music: Eleganz geht dabei vor Abfahrt, Struktur vor Funktionalität, Musikalität und Atmosphäre vor Tanzbarkeit. So fragt man sich am Ende der Reise mit „Privilege“, auf der Glitterbug einen nach China und Israel mitnimmt, wieso um dieses Album nicht eine ähnliche Aufregung herrscht, wie sie zur Veröffentlichung des letzten Pantha Du Prince-Album allgegenwärtig war. Soviel Aufmerksamkeit wie dieses Album einfordert, hat es nämlich auch verdient. Florian Schneider

Koloński odszczepieniec prezentuje swoje muzyczne opus magnum
Kiedy na początku lat 90. detroitowe techno dotarło do Niemiec za sprawą klubu Tresor i sklepu Hard Wax, tamtejsi producenci rozwinęli pomysły ich starszych kolegów z Motor City w dwóch kierunkach – mocnego i konkretnego grania w stylu Underground Resistance oraz bardziej rozbudowanej i klimatycznej muzyki, o zdecydowanie epickim charakterze, tętniącej transowym pulsem. Nagrania tych pierwszych publikował przede wszystkim Tresor, a utwory tych drugich – wytwórnie spoza stolicy zjednoczonych Niemiec, choćby Fax czy Harthouse z Frankfurtu.
O ile korzenne techno w tresorowym stylu święci dzisiaj triumfalny powrót, tak to transowe, wydaje się nadal pozostawać w zapomnieniu. Są jednak wyjątki od tej reguły. Najważniejszym z nich jest twórczość kolońskiego producenta Tilla Rohmanna, ukrywającego się pod pseudonimem Glitterbug.
Działając od dwóch dekad na elektronicznej scenie, dał się najpierw poznać, jako pomysłowy didżej specjalizujący się w monumentalnych setach na trzy gramofony, potem jako sprawny animator życia klubowego oraz festiwalowego (również w Izraelu) i wreszcie – utalentowany producent. W tej ostatniej inkarnacji objawił się światu dwa lata temu, wydając płytę „Supershelter”, przywołującą czasy, kiedy ambient, techno i trance były jednością. Najnowsze dzieło Lohmanna – podwójny album „Privilege” – to kontynuacja wątków z debiutu, ale w jeszcze bardziej epickiej formule.
Album zaczyna się dokładnie tak, jak powinien – od rozmarzonego ambientu, zatopionego w szumiących dźwiękach otoczenia i urzekającego subtelnymi pasażami fortepianu („Lionheart”). Dopiero potem z tych impresjonistycznych dźwięków wyłania się miarowy puls techno niosący perliste pasaże pastelowych syntezatorów podbite głębokim pochodem basu („Swirl”). Kiedy mocne uderzenia bębna milkną, pojawiają się znów delikatne akordy piano – tym razem zdubowane studyjnymi pogłosami i oplecione wianuszkiem perlistych klawiszy („Blue Rifts”). Wiodą one prosto do solidnego segmentu transowego techno o majestatycznym brzmieniu.
Tym razem wolne i ciężkie bity wyłaniają się gęstego szumu („Wide And Near”), torując drogę sążnistym falom syntezatorowych melodii o przejmującej melodyce („Calcutta”), od czasu do czasu stylizowanych a to na detroitową („After All”), a to na chicagowską („Confront”) modłę. Punktem kulminacyjnym tego zestawu jest mordercze „Pink Sparks (Cave Edit)” – warczące i grzechoczące klawiszowymi przesterami smoliste techno o dronowym basie. Na koniec pierwszego krążka następuje zwrot ku laboratoryjnemu minimalowi w archetypowej wersji: masywny „Vertical Entent” przywołujący wspomnienie wczesnych nagrań z Sähkö czy Raster Noton.

Recent work of Lohmann – a double album, “Privilege” – is a continuation of themes from her debut, but even more epic formula.
The album starts out exactly as it should – from ambient dreamless, sunk in the rustling sounds lovely surroundings and subtle piano passages (“Lionheart”). Only then these impressionistic tone emerges, carrying a steady pulse of techno pearly pastel synthesizer passages lined with deep bass procession (“Swirl”). When the strong silent strike the drum, there are delicate chords piano again – this time zdubowane studio reverberations flirting ring of pearly buttons (“Blue Rifts). They lead straight into a solid segment of the majestic transowego techno sound.

Poëtische wereldreis
Twee jaar nadat muziekjournalist René Passet Glitterbug uitriep als ‘Duitsland’s best bewaarde technogeheim’ staat Glitterbug met het immense tour de force ‘Privilige’ klaar om te bewijzen dat die stelling nog steeds klopt. Een dubbelalbum van twintig tracks gehuld in een soort concept, dat van ‘bevoorrecht zijn’.
Till Rohman is namelijk een bevoorrecht man. Of dat zegt hij tenminste zelf, verstopt onder zijn ‘Glitterbug’-moniker. Na de release van het debuutalbum ‘Supershelter’ mocht Glitterbug op kosten van anderen de hele wereld rondreizen. Hij speelde op festivals in Israel, trok door China en rilde van de kou in Noorwegen. Hij verkende vreemde oorden met zijn opnameapparaat en verwerkt die field recordings nu op ‘Privilige’. Niet Janek Shaeffer-gewijs, maar zoals wij het van Duitse electronica-artiesten gewoon zijn: in een uitgekiende balans van deep house, gevoelige techno en ambient.
Glitterbug neemt je twee uur lang – zonder dat het zo aanvoelt – mee op zijn bevoorrechte wereldreis en dompelt je onder in de warmste technogeluiden, afgewisseld met klassieke Detroit-techno en eindeloos getuur op een kabbelend beekje dat nooit verveelt. Rohman laat, ondanks dat de beats in een minderheid zijn, duidelijk horen dat zijn roots in het minimal techno-geobsedeerde clubcircuit liggen zonder dat hij hofleverancier wilt zijn. Daarvoor schuilen er teveel andere muzikale werelden in zijn hoofd. Werelden waarvoor hij een piano nodig heeft. Wanneer de beats je nachtenlang overmeesterd hebben en de morning after minder verdraagzaam is.
‘Privilege’ neem je niet zomaar tot je. Het is luisteren en je onderdompelen, even opveren, handen in de lucht en verder soezen. Maar vooral, geluiden absorberen en betoverd worden door het muzikale klankenpallet van Glitterbug.
